Classification
of surface waters on the basis of best-
designated use is carried out after assessing the existing water quality.
This is an important tool for the effective management of the environment
and for pollution control. The Central Pollution Control Board has laid down
guidelines to be followed for this classification. This Board is implementing
a continuous program to classify the surface waters of Kerala after assessing
the water quality. Classification of 12 rivers has been completed and more
rivers have now been taken up for classification.
